BIO
Daudi Kaggwa
(b. 1995, Kampala, Uganda) is a contemporary artist living and working in Nairobi, Kenya. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Art (Hons) from the University of Cape Town, with a background in photography and sculpture, and is currently pursuing a Master of Fine Art at the Royal College of Art in London. Interested in figurative abstraction as a form of visual storytelling and paying close attention to colour and composition, Kaggwa’s current expression is primarily painting.

His practice is marked by a representational visual language using a modish colour pallet and a strong conceptual foundation. Kaggwa’s work focuses on the relationship between memory, imagination, and colour and interrogates notions of structure, freedom, and transformation from a universal and contemporary perspective. The conceptual tensions in his work displayed in a manner where control and spontaneity, order and disruption, coexist in a dynamic interplay.

The concept of painting as an extension of the mind has been explored throughout art history, as a means to access the subconscious and use painting as a means to channel  emotions and concepts onto canvas. Kaggwa’s work captures fleeting moments—both real and imagined—while evoking emotional and atmospheric depth. His paintings function as extensions of the mind, emphasizing tonal relationships and the emotive power of color to create immersive visual experiences. Kaggwa’s intention is for the viewer to look beyond the surface and concentrate on the emotion and the atmosphere within the work and evoke emotional and otherworldly experiences.

Previously, Kaggwa served as the Creative Manager for Circle Art Gallery in Nairobi. His work has been exhibited in both solo and group exhibitions in Kenya, South Africa and the United Kingdom.
